Building Capacity vs Building Talent

In our experience working with economic development agencies globally, we often hear the term, “Capacity Building.” We agree that capacity building is vital in creating momentum sustainable beyond the individuals that are creating change in their communities and organizations. Meanwhile, the reality is that without the talented people affecting these organizations, or those working to enhance their communities or organizations, capacity building can’t be effective.

We suggest the focus should be on considering building talent first, in order to build capacity. That might sound expensive, but the reality of long term vision is that you have to try different things to discover what works, and you have to be consistent in your methodology as you try specific things.

In our experience learning from economic agencies globally, the methodology of trying something then correcting errors will create and sustain capacity building by developing and attracting talented individuals.

As we travel from country to country, it is fascinating to see that some individuals are looking for immediate results based on capacity building. The reality is that capacity building is a continual process. Yes, you can start something with a life span of one to three years to create capacity in a specific area, but maintenance and ongoing support is needed to keep the momentum going.

Sometimes the short vision of “results today, only today,” can sidetrack the capacity building momentum for long term vision and sustainability. These lessons are, in so many ways, similar to the entrepreneurial journey of starting and growing a business — you may have to try a few things to figure out the best way to do something and in the process, stay consistent about what you are trying to do.

For capacity building, building talent locally is a key to insure that people are exposed and informed about the opportunities they may have to keep the local talented individuals, or attract them globally to come stay and play in your community.
