That’s What I Meant

In entrepreneurship, and especially in the leadership world, I’ve often heard people say, “That’s what I meant” when they said what they said, then everybody else jumps in with a the new way of articulating the message or story.

That’s exactly what I meant.. indicates that at some point, the message you articulated did not come through to the other person (or the group). As you continue to grow your business or leadership skills finding ways to relay the message in language that is familiar to your community or group is key. Keep in mind that it’s not always about the concept, but more about how you articulate the concept. It’s not about you understanding the idea, it’s about the other person understanding the idea.

Having ways to relay your message with examples or words that they understand is key.

This is especially important when we’re talking about entrepreneurship finance. If you tell a story to attract funding, gain financing, or to purchase a building, finding ways to articulate your message is key. You must get your message across to the right person at the right time with the right information, so they can process and react to it.

This takes time, insight, and a very important skill that we don’t always consider: Listening. One thing I learned a long time ago, as many of you already know is the art of listening to understand rather than listening to respond. As Stephen Covey said, that takes active listening.

As you construct your next message, think about:

Who is the intended audience?

What I am trying to say?

How can I simplify so they will understand it and move forward?

BEFORE YOU GO

We see our blogs as opportunities for dialogue. Please share your thoughts as comments.

  1. How will you modify your message moving forward?

  2. What can you change to make sure the message attracts the people you want as customers or clients?

  3. What other tools have you used to communicate with customers, clients, or prospects?
