SELF: The Resilient Entrepreneur

I’ve been shaped by the fact that I grew up as a refugee, and then became a refugee a second time as the result of a war. These things helped shaped me personally, but also shaped how I see the world today. Listening and observing other entrepreneurs and leaders around the world has allowed me to draw from the things I’ve learned, but also leverage the knowledge they have shared with me. While we all know that one scenario is never exactly the same as another, there are some things we can learn from or draw from the past to help us overcome the current obstacles.

The second step in the Resilient Entrepreneur program is UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF.

Under this category, we have two pillars:

  1. ME

  2. WHAT IS AROUND ME

The first pillar: ME

For many years I denied that I was a refugee, living in a dream that one day I’d be able to return to the country from which I originally came. I am blessed today to be a U.S. citizen. This is now my home, but I also realize that we never really let go of the past.

It’s important to acknowledge the scenario that you are in today.

It’s OK to freak out. When COVID-19 broke out, many leaders didn’t know what to do or how to address the situation. What we’ve learned is that it’s OK to freak out, but you have to move on to action - because without action nothing will happen.

Consider the source of all information given to you. Who is sharing it? What is their motive? Always research the source of the information being shared with you. If Joe tells you “Don’t wear a mask,” ask yourself: Is Joe a doctor? If not, where did he get this information? Why, his buddy Jim told him! That’s nice. Neither Jim nor Joe are doctors, therefore why would I listen to them in this specific matter? It’s important to know and trust the source before you follow any lead.

The second pillar: WHAT IS AROUND ME?

You need to understand who and what you have surrounded yourself with. Are they - and their motives - supporting or hurting you? Can you have them leverage what they have with you, or be a connection that makes life better for you personally?

BEFORE YOU GO:

We see our blogs as opportunities for dialogue. Please share your thoughts as comments.

  • What are you doing to stay safe and secure?

  • From what sources are you getting your information? How and with whom are you sharing it? Who surrounds you?

  • What advice do you have for others on this topic?
