The Challenge of Defining Success

Throughout my career, I’ve learned that many leaders define success based on different ideals. In today’s discussion, I will highlight the challenges of defining success.

Over the years, I have seen that many resilient and successful entrepreneurs and leaders do not allow others to define their success. They defined it for themselves. This is where many of us fall into a trap. We see someone doing ABC or XYZ, and think we need to do the same to be successful.

The reality is that the individual or corporation may be struggling or facing major challenges that we don’t see or will never hear about.

So, think about defining success for yourself.

While owning a car or a house, might look like success to one person, they are not necessarily proof of success for another. What could be a major success for one person, depending on what and how they define success, might be next to nothing for another.

Don’t let others mislead you about what success is in your life or business. Success is not having a car. It is not having a house. It is not taking vacations. It is not having a million dollars in the bank.

Actually, it may be all of those things to some people. Success for one person might be having a one-bedroom apartment, while to others, a 1,000 square foot house is the measure. Each of us should be able to define success in our own way.

The minute we start looking at others and comparing/judging ourselves against them, we become victims of the misconceptions of success.
