Leadership is neither Easy nor Comfortable

Leadership is neither easy nor comfortable: While many leaders around the world have shared this adage with us over the years, we’re hearing it much more than ever as we deal with COVID.

Speaking out in tough times is vital for leaders, because that is how we as humans get things done. We need to continue to march toward the unknown, the unseen, imagining a future that can be better for all of us.

Whether we are standing up for economic prosperity, human rights, against racism, or wanting to deliver a service to a customer in need, leadership that moves things forward comes in as many ways, forms, and shapes as we can imagine.

One of the things we’ve learned is that some leaders choose to go in one direction, others in a different direction. As entrepreneurs choose today to find new ways to keep their business moving by creating new models, their dream continues to live and move forward. They keep the wheels turning.

Many have changed the way they do business. Some restaurants might have had to buy a tent and seat outside, others have chosen to put limits on the number of people that can be served. Some have begun to offer delivery services, and the list goes on.

Those with products seem to have transitioned quickly to online, and although it’s a different world, it is a world that we should have been in a while ago. But don’t forget that physical spaces will continue to be relevant despite what is happening around us today.

We’ve seen a huge effort in organizations making sure the physical businesses continue to serve their communities, making sure that everyone has access to the services needed or provided.

As you may consider charting a new course—perhaps something you don’t know how to do at the moment—remember that you started the business not knowing all of the answers but moving forward anyway.

BEFORE YOU GO

We see our blogs as opportunities for dialogue. Please share your thoughts as comments.

As we continue to move forward, think about:

  1. What can you do to reexamine your business model today?

  2. What other opportunities can you explore with the resources you have at hand?

  3. What other mindsets have you utilized to keep moving forward?
